The Graduate School’s office of Graduate Student Affairs offers regular and ongoing programs to help our students succeed during and beyond their time at the UW. We also offer student success programming for first-generation and international graduate students.

University 501 (U501) is a self-guided, online orientation designed for graduate and professional students at all three UW campuses.

New and returning first-generation graduate students are invited to attend a community social for the fall quarter. At this free event, you’ll be able to participate in a networking activity, build community, and enjoy free light foods and refreshments!

Are you a graduate student who wants to perfect your presentation skills for a general audience? Submit a proposal to give a 5-min., low stakes lightning talk about your capstone, dissertation or pedagogy! Scholars’ Studio is an opportunity to practice communicating your work in front of a supportive general audience — without using a lot of technical or academic jargon.

The UW honors National First-Gen College Celebration every early November. In recognition of this tri-campus occasion, first-gen graduate students are invited to this fall welcome event! This free event is sponsored by Graduate Student Affairs in The Graduate School and UW Libraries Research Commons. 

Featuring UW First-Gen guest speakers:

  • Dr. Carmen Gonzalez, Dart Endowed Assistant Professor in Trauma, Journalism, and Communication and Associate Director for the Center for Communication, Difference, & Equity, Seattle campus

Winter 2024

Exploring Careers In & Beyond Academia: A Symposium for Ph.D. Students Across Disciplines

January 16 & January 23, 2024, 2:30–6:30 p.m.
Seattle campus

Are you just starting your Ph.D. program or in the process of finalizing your dissertation proposal? Have you reflected on future career paths after receiving your Ph.D.? Are you a Postdoc and unsure whether to pursue a career in or beyond academia? This symposium will provide you with insights, tools, informational resources, and professional connections to support your career exploration.

This event will include: 

  • One Keynote Speaker
  • Two Moderated Panels
  • Three Professional Development Workshops
  • Multiple Networking Opportunities
  • Free Dinner & Refreshments

At the end of the event, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand how to use a career self-assessment tool to identify your interests, skills, and values.
  • Learn insights from guest speakers and panels about careers inside and beyond academia.
  • Gain strategies to assess a possible employer’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) practices.

Attendees will have an opportunity to:

  • Connect with first-gen peers at the graduate level
  • Learn about the history of supports for first-gen graduate students at the UW
  • Learn about the role of the first-gen graduate student advisory board
  • Hear next steps to participate in upcoming advisory board meetings

UW Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

Call for Proposals – For Virtual Preliminary Round
Submit your proposal by April 23, 2024, 11:59 p.m. (PT)
Virtual preliminary round: Early May 2024
Competition day: May 23, 2024, 3–4:30 p.m., Seattle campus

Theme: How does your graduate research demonstrate impact for the public good?

Are you a UW graduate student in the final stages of your capstone, thesis, or dissertation project? Submit a proposal to present at the online preliminary round in early May. Successful presenters from the preliminary round will move forward to compete at the 2024 UW Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, with an opportunity to win First Place, Runner Up, or People’s Choice Awards. The competition is open to all eligible graduate students from Bothell, Tacoma, and Seattle campuses.
