Ph.D. Task Force launching Fall 2025

The University of Washington taskforce on the Future of Ph.D. Education will launch this fall. This strategic initiative, jointly spearheaded by the Office of the Provost and the Graduate School, aims to chart bold, forward-thinking directions for UW’s Ph.D. programs and the students they serve.

As a leading R1 research institution with nearly 900 Ph.D. students, the UW is uniquely positioned to shape national conversations around doctoral education. The task force will explore innovative approaches to preparing the next generation of scholars, researchers, and public leaders, while reinforcing the university’s commitment to advancing the public good.

The task force will be co-chaired by Joy Williamson-Lott, Dean of the Graduate School, and Daniel Pollack, Divisional Dean of Natural Sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences. Its membership will include a diverse group of faculty, staff, and student representatives from Ph.D. programs across the university.

Stay tuned for updates, opportunities to engage, and ways to contribute your voice to this important work. Preliminary thoughts and suggestions can be shared via email at graddean@uw.edu.
