The Gatzert Child Welfare Fellowship is a one-quarter fellowship awarded to UW Ph.D. candidates writing dissertations that contribute to the lives of children with disabilities. Reham Abuatiq’s research aims to develop innovative interventions and assistive technologies to promote accessibility and motor development for children with disabilities. Abuatiq is passionate about creating inclusive environments and advocating for the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities from a young age.
Her dissertation explores the needs of Middle Eastern youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities during their transition from pediatric to adult healthcare services in Washington State. Abuatiq utilizes participatory action research methods, such as photovoice, to empower research participants to share their experiences and stories, forming an accessible and inclusive research approach.
Abuatiq’s professional goal is to improve the well-being and quality of life for individuals with disabilities using inclusive research methods and innovative assistive technologies.
