Why did you decide to attend graduate school?
I have a profound curiosity about high imperial and late antique Roman worlds. It is both a great challenge and a great privilege to explore the cultural dynamics of these lost worlds, which, although they are lost, were formative for the society that I live in now. My decision to pursue a Ph.D. reflects my decision to devote my life to sharing the world that I study with anyone interested.
What are your career plans post-graduate school?
I plan to apply for jobs both inside and outside the academy. I would enjoy working at a research institution, but I would also love to teach at a magnet high school, middle school, or small college. I would be very grateful for the chance to give students an opportunity to study the languages and cultures of the ancient world.
What advice would you give undergraduates thinking about graduate school?
If possible, develop a research project that really speaks to your interest. Apply for funding or awards for this project. This will help to clarify your thinking about the direction of your future research, scholarly interests, and career, and will really help to prepare you for the challenges of graduate school. It will look good on applications, too!
