Why did you decide to attend the University of Washington for your graduate studies?

The UW English department is home to some really innovative and inspiring scholars in terms of race and queer studies. As a queer Chicano scholar interested in representation, I’m thrilled to be here!

Where do you hope your graduate education will take you?

I want to continue my research exploring the politics, representation, belonging, and identity but I also feel that my work has an important place in the classroom. My hope is that my work, both scholarly and public can help be become a good teacher and help other first generation students of color like myself toward success and a better world.

What advice would you give undergraduates thinking about graduate school?

Always ask for more and make them tell you no. Remember that there’s always something more to learn. Work a little more than you think you need to. And make friends with the people in the diversity programs, financial aid, and anyone who hands you coffee.
