Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Paper-based Test

The paper-based (TOEFL) test measures English language proficiency in the following areas:

Total Score 310 to 677

Internet-based Test

The internet-based (iBT) test measures English language proficiency in the following areas:

Listening 0 to 30
Reading 0 to 30
Speaking 0 to 30
Writing 0 to 30
Total Score 0 to 120

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) provides a profile of a candidate’s ability to use English.  Candidates receive scores on a Band Scale from 1 to 9.

Note: Many UW graduate programs do not accept IELTS test scores.  Please check the programs’ websites prior to scheduling a test exam to ensure your IELTS scores will be considered.  The Graduate School is phasing out the usage of IELTS and will not accept scores with a test session date after May 31, 2017.
